The Silence – Then What?

Yup it has been yet another day where I feel blown away by reading the words of Oswald Chambers.

Today’s devotional was all about silence. A consistent theme here on my blog is about being in the moment, not being anxious and learning to be still and enjoy now. In today’s day and age it’s so much easier said than done, especially when it comes to your faith. This post challenges my faith more plainly than I have heard before and that I love that straight forward kind of communication.

check out today’s devotional from Oswald Chambers over at upmost.org. I also have it below.

Enjoy

God’s Silence— Then What?

Has God trusted you with His silence— a silence that has great meaning? God’s silences are actually His answers. Just think of those days of absolute silence in the home at Bethany! Is there anything comparable to those days in your life? Can God trust you like that, or are you still asking Him for a visible answer? God will give you the very blessings you ask if you refuse to go any further without them, but His silence is the sign that He is bringing you into an even more wonderful understanding of Himself. Are you mourning before God because you have not had an audible response? When you cannot hear God, you will find that He has trusted you in the most intimate way possible— with absolute silence, not a silence of despair, but one of pleasure, because He saw that you could withstand an even bigger revelation. If God has given you a silence, then praise Him— He is bringing you into the mainstream of His purposes. The actual evidence of the answer in time is simply a matter of God’s sovereignty. Time is nothing to God. For a while you may have said, “I asked God to give me bread, but He gave me a stone instead” (see Matthew 7:9). He did not give you a stone, and today you find that He gave you the “bread of life” (John 6:35).

A wonderful thing about God’s silence is that His stillness is contagious— it gets into you, causing you to become perfectly confident so that you can honestly say, “I know that God has heard me.” His silence is the very proof that He has. As long as you have the idea that God will always bless you in answer to prayer, He will do it, but He will never give you the grace of His silence. If Jesus Christ is bringing you into the understanding that prayer is for the glorifying of His Father, then He will give you the first sign of His intimacy— silence.

This last Sunday was one to remember. Between taking public transportation exclusively and 4 major events It was a perfect storm in the tourist sense.

The first weekend of October in the Bay area was (according to multiple news outlets) going to possibly break records when it came to visitors. They were estimating around 1 million visitors over the weekend. The reason? Fleet Week, 2 Giants playoff games, 49ers game, America’s Cup pre qualifying, and….The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Regardless of the hype and promise of double SF population. I decided to jump in and join the madness with the roommate (Steven Shearer). We took Amtrak from Sacramento down to Richmond, hopped over to BART and into the city. We were able to get to the top of a building after eating some food and marveled at the air show (thanks to Fleet Week) After that we decided to catch a bus and ride all the way to Golden Gate Park. We got off prematurely because we didnt’ know where we were. So after walking about 15 blocks we finally made it to the festival and joined the other 15,000 (estimated) festival goers. The main reason we were going was to see the Civil Wars. Our friends Jenna, Hannah, and Tim all joined us once we got ourselves situated at the Rooster Stage. Needless to say it was an awesome day in the city and not nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be.

All the photos you see below were taken will a Canon 60D (LOVE IT!)

Dynamics of the Subway

Each note from the instruments is represented by a geometric shape in the animation; while these shapes move in sync with the song, they also form the parts that create the subway itself.

Are You Ever Troubled?

Today, I was reading out of my devotional (My Utmost for His Highest) and it really got me thinking. In a world of non stop going, updating, tweeting, farmvilling, Netflixing, I often find myself not at peace. I worry I am going to miss out on something. Today’s words from Oswald Chambers helps me get back to a place where I can re-focus. A particular quote from the devotional hit me good.

“If you are not right with God, you can never turn your mind anywhere but on yourself.”

Thinking about that actually makes sense. I do this often and today I have been challenged to change this habit.

Here is the entire devotional for August 26th from My Utmost for His Highest

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you . . . —John 14:27

There are times in our lives when our peace is based simply on our own ignorance. But when we are awakened to the realities of life, true inner peace is impossible unless it is received from Jesus. When our Lord speaks peace, He creates peace, because the words that He speaks are always “spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Have I ever received what Jesus speaks? “. . . My peace I give to you. . .”— a peace that comes from looking into His face and fully understanding and receiving His quiet contentment.Are you severely troubled right now? Are you afraid and confused by the waves and the turbulence God sovereignly allows to enter your life? Have you left no stone of your faith unturned, yet still not found any well of peace, joy, or comfort? Does your life seem completely barren to you? Then look up and receive the quiet contentment of the Lord Jesus. Reflecting His peace is proof that you are right with God, because you are exhibiting the freedom to turn your mind to Him. If you are not right with God, you can never turn your mind anywhere but on yourself. Allowing anything to hide the face of Jesus Christ from you either causes you to become troubled or gives you a false sense of security.With regard to the problem that is pressing in on you right now, are you “looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2) and receiving peace from Him? If so, He will be a gracious blessing of peace exhibited in and through you. But if you only try to worry your way out of the problem, you destroy His effectiveness in you, and you deserve whatever you get. We become troubled because we have not been taking Him into account. When a person confers with Jesus Christ, the confusion stops, because there is no confusion in Him. Lay everything out before Him, and when you are faced with difficulty, bereavement, and sorrow, listen to Him say, “Let not your heart be troubled . . .” (John 14:27).

Is the Internet Making Us Crazy?

I have posted in the past about being to closely connected to the internet and social media. This Newsweek posted back in July talks about many different educational establishments conducting research on what the web does to our minds. It’s compelling and really gets me thinking about my own usage.

If you dare to find some alarming facts about this subject, select the link below and spend 10 mins reading it. Let me know what you think.

Future Learning

I love learning, but never liked school. I think I could look back on school and honestly say that I enjoyed, maybe 3 classes. This includes my short college stint.

I love what this video represents. Unfortunatly, education reform is a large mountain to climb and won’t be easy. Enjoy this mini-documentary, courtesy of GOOD!

Cheers

A Day in Sacramento

Let me give you a background on why this video exists. I was dying to work with Final Cut Pro X and use a SLR to shoot a video of my city, Sacramento, CA. At this point, I had never used a SLR for video and wasn’t sure what it would be like. I had an idea of what I wanted to do. I grabbed a few friends and went shooting for 6+ hours.

November in the City is beautiful. Sacramento is considered the city of trees. With that many trees and fall in full force it added some major production value. My original idea was to capture various parts of Sacramento and try to convey how cool it really was. Well, it didn’t happen that way (not to say Sacramento isn’t cool).

After spending quite a bit of time trying to force my clips into the original idea, I got frustrated and stopped. Over and over, I kept using the excuse, “I need more shots.” In my head I was ready to give up and leave the video in the “nice try” pile. Despite attempt after attempt of getting more shots, it wasn’t working.

I went back to the proverbial drawing board and started fresh. After looking at all my clips sitting in Final Cut and having many conversations with friends, I figured out what I could really do with what I had and went for it. I scrapped my previous work and the result is the video you see above. My video of Sacramento turned into a video about my friends and I experiencing Sacramento.

Overall this video represents the ability to conquer the mental blocks and discouragement that comes while traveling through the creative process.

Enjoy!

Fear of the Unknown

Fear of the unknown.

Something I find absolutely terrifying.

It’s this crippling feeling that I have yet to really master. It’s the unknown that makes me not commit

Not committing means no challenges.

No challenges means there is no growth.

No growth means being stagnant and getting bored.

Getting bored can get you in trouble, it feeds the monsters of laziness and slothfulness in your life.

Being lazy means your skills get rusty and when those skills are rusty it’s harder for them to be used.

Don’t be afraid of the unknown. It’s risky, but with that risk comes the chance of reward, which is something you won’t get if you back down from that dark place called the unknown.

Old School: Myself

Myself

I have to live with myself, and so

I want to be fit for myself to know,

I want to be able, as the days go by,

Always to look myself straight in the eye;

I don’t want to stand, with the setting sun,

And hate myself for the things I have done.

I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf

A lot of secrets about myself,

And fool myself, as I come and go,

Into thinking that nobody else will know

The kind of a man I really am;

I don’t want to dress up  myself in sham.

I want to go out with my head erect,

I want to deserve all men’s respect;

But here in the struggle for fame and pelf

I want to be able to like myself.

I don’t want to look at myself and know

That I’m a bluster and bluff and empty show.

I can never hide myself from me;

I see what others may never see;

I know what others may never know,

I never can fool myself, and so

Whatever happens, I want to be

Self-respecting and conscience free.
